They say necessity is the mother of invention – that’s certainly the case with our story.
It all began over a decade ago, when Silicon Valley companies started wooing new recruits with lifestyle perks beyond free food – laundry services, nap pods, onsite doctors, you name it. Suddenly, companies of all sizes were scrambling to reexamine their unique value propositions in order to stay relevant and attract top talent. At the same time, the lines between work and life were growing increasingly blurred, with more employees desiring a better work-life balance and expecting employers to deliver. And who can blame them? Just the sound of “corporate dining” puts us to sleep.
While gimmicky new recruitment efforts were certainly getting talent in the door, they did very little to solve the problem of long-term employee satisfaction and engagement. Something was off. When we looked closer, we realized most programs were missing a crucial ingredient – customization. Instead of truly factoring the needs of their workforce into their offerings, most companies were using off-the-shelf, one-size-fits-all approaches to dining and hospitality solutions. That’s when a lightbulb went off.
What if we could talk to companies the way they speak to potential employees? Get to know their culture? What makes them tick? What makes them different? Understand their distinct personalities? Learn about their strengths and weaknesses? And what if we could do all of this and create solutions TAILOR- made for them? Not just a dining hall – but a dining experience, with local flavors and menus featuring cuisines from around the world crafted from fresh, handmade ingredients. Not just a conference center – but a collaborative community where ideas are posted to the walls in between ping pong matches. Not just a coffee cart – but a casual meeting spot that transports you into a café where coffee and conversation brew creativity.
In 2009, we decided to turn the “What Ifs” into “We Cans” and LifeWorks was born. Our mission was (and remains) simple: to transform the workplace through food and environments that facilitate connection, collaboration, community, and creativity – and recruit the very best talent.
